Hey gamers! Do you still remember when you wrapped around your controller with the half-broken wire to temporarily make a fix? Or pressed the PS2 play button 3 times to make a PS1 CD work? Or let's say, you remember you have once copied a game shortcut from a friend's computer and ended up disappointed?

Yeah, me too. Nostalgia hits different when it comes to gaming, and the wild part is, a good chunk of that childhood library quietly made its way onto Steam over the years. No dusty console needed, and no hunting down a working memory card anymore, now it's easy to just install and relive it on our modern PC.

So let's take a walk down memory lane. Here's a stack of old-school favorites, from PS1/PSP/PS2 era classics to early PC gaming staples, that you can legitimately fire up on Steam right now.

1. PlayStation and Other Console Classics

This is the era that made a lot of us fall in love with gaming in the first place, chunky polygons, questionable camera angles, and soundtracks that are permanently stuck in our heads. The good news is publishers have been busy remastering and porting a bunch of these straight to Steam.

• Crash Bandicoot N. Sane Trilogy — the original PS1 trilogy remastered, still just as punishing on your patience, in the best way.
• Spyro Reignited Trilogy — that cozy purple dragon is back, prettier than ever, and yes, breathing fire and flying around is still a blast.
• Final Fantasy VII — the original 1997 classic, still holding up as one of the most iconic JRPGs of all time. And there's a remake too, but this is the one that started it all.
• Kingdom Hearts — the whole saga eventually landed on Steam, so you can finally understand the plot without a wiki open on another tab (still difficult, but you'll manage).
• Persona 4 Golden and Persona 3 Portable — both PSP-era gems, now on Steam and both still absurdly addicting.
• Metal Gear Solid: Master Collection Vol. 1 — Snake's earliest sneaking missions, now bundled and ready to confuse a new generation with cardboard boxes.
• GTA: The Trilogy – Definitive Edition — San Andreas, Vice City, and III, glowed up (with mixed opinions on the glow-up, but hey, it's there).
• Resident Evil 4 — reimagined for modern hardware, but the dread of the village chainsaw guy hits just the same.
• Tomba! Special Edition and Tomba! 2 Special Edition — the weird, wonderful platformer with a pink-haired hero and a pig problem, now on Steam for a new generation to enjoy.
• Pac-Man World Re-PAC — the OG PS1 3D platformer starring the yellow dot muncher himself, butt-bounce and all.
• Story of Seasons: Friends of Mineral Town — Originally named Harvest Moon: Friends of Mineral Town, this farming simulation game has found a new home on Steam with improved graphics and gameplay.

Some games have stayed with the old style while the others have been remastered, replaying any of these feels like a warm hug from your childhood, minus the loading screens that used to last an eternity.

2. PC Games

PC gaming in the 2000s was a different beast entirely, LAN parties, dial-up lag, and games so good we didn't even mind. A lot of these never really left, they just moved onto Steam and stuck around.

• Half-Life and Half-Life 2 — the games that basically proved Valve knew what they were doing from the very start.
• Counter-Strike — from the 1.6 days to Counter-Strike 2 now, this one never actually left our hard drives.
• Age of Empires II: Definitive Edition — still the RTS comfort food, still deeply satisfying to build a Wonder just to win.
• Command & Conquer Remastered Collection — Tiberian Dawn and Red Alert, remastered and still just as chaotic as you remember.
• Rise of Nations — RTS from Big Huge Games that left you a memory of building an ancient great empire to a modern civilization in the midst of war time.
• RollerCoaster Tycoon (Classic and the 3 Complete Edition) — yes, you can still build a coaster designed purely to make guests throw up.
• Old School RuneScape — the browser-tab MMO of our youth, officially on Steam now, grinding included.
• The Sims Legacy Collection and The Sims 2 Legacy Collection — The first Sims games with complete packs, we're so back!
• PopCap Party Pack — Zuma Deluxe, Chuzzle Deluxe, Peggle Deluxe, Bejeweled 3, and Plants vs. Zombies GOTY Edition, the casual PC games that ate up way more of our lives than we'd like to admit.

If you grew up on an internet cafe PC or a family desktop that somehow ran everything at 15 FPS, this list alone probably just triggered a wave of memories.

Nostalgia is a funny thing, it makes the grainy textures and dated mechanics feel charming instead of outdated. What's cool about this whole wave of remasters and ports is that we don't have to just remember these games anymore, we can actually go back and play them, bugs, jank, and all the good memories included.
