The Big 3 of Life Simulation Games

gamescomparisonsimulation

If you have a past image of yourself controlling someone or many people's life in a simulated universe that talk in gibberish, burn their stove as many times as they cook, or drown themselves into a no-ladder swimming pool, then you must be familiar enough with The Sims series.

But now talking about how long the title has ruled over the past two decades, the time finally arrived that The Sims now has competitors in the life simulation genre, their titles are inZOI and Paralives. We will talk about how these titles are competing with one another while maintaining distinct qualities. Let's start with the legend itself.

1. The Sims

The Sims series is indeed the veteran, the one that basically invented the genre back in 2000 after the other title - SimCity, inspired Maxis to make the first ever-known human simulation game. It was the first to stand but still stay strong until today with their big title, The Sims 4.

It is without saying that The Sims series was the only one in the genre that got massive back in the day. It was like playing a doll house but on your PC, you manage your people, dress them to your liking, decorate your interiors and your house exteriors. With these abilities, the game surprisingly built a massive following among players who love spending their time designing a house, making their Sims good-looking, or just watching people interact with one another. It was a fun and harmless play, the game is lovely.

The Sims has their series complemented with its other expansions, like having pets, having other sophisticated job or new settings or environments. But this will be the biggest catch most of the players don't like, they are gated behind another paywall to have the whole experience. They have tonnes of expansions and each one costs the price of another whole game. But so far, The Sims 4 is generous enough to let you get the base game for free.

So, is the game worth it? In my experience, it will depend on the player. If you are okay to play the basic game, like The Sims 4 which is free, it still offers a lot of features and you can experience the classic behavior of the Sims, but after a while, indeed, it will get old. If you like to play the game with full experience, like with many expansions on, then it will be way too pricey just to play a single game.

But nevertheless, The Sims title is the pioneer, the game is much more stable, and the PC requirement is applicable for most, even your lower-end PC can handle it, which is great, specifically the minimum you should have on your PC is 64-bit processing / Core i3 / 4 GB RAM / GeForce 6600, or check the details on The Sims 4 page on Steam. This should be very inclusive for lower specs in most modern PCs, however extending the game will be another story about your ability to afford the price. So yeah, it still has great value overall, unless it is about the price tags on the extension packs.

2. inZOI

Move on, we have the next generation of its kind, it has the high-fidelity and hyper-realistic style built with Unreal Engine 5. The game is developed by inZOI Studio and published by KRAFTON, titled "inZOI". When The Sims has "Sim", inZOI has "Zoi" to call its person. inZOI is said to have a much more complex and complete character customization feature than The Sims. In inZOI, the art style is felt more likely to resemble Korean art style than a rather-cartoonish we have in The Sims. It almost looks like you're watching a drama on a Korean streaming platform, that's so far the vibe we can see and feel on the official trailer.

In inZOI, they introduce the "Karma" system and AI-driven smart Zoi behavior, where Zoi characters make decisions based on their personality and their past experiences, which will give a big immersion to our gaming experience.

The Karma system itself has its own controversy though, Karma system promotes better luck for good people and bad luck for the baddies. This system could push everybody to act morally good and prevent people to be bad actors, which could feel a little restraining for some people who demand total freedom, but there are also other players who don't feel bothered with it because morally good is generally acceptable, and there is still debate going on about this topic.

The game itself is still in the early access, and as far as we know the content is not completed yet when this is written. But the experience is so much better for people who want a better graphic on life simulation genre. Still, the interaction is said to lack the feels than its pioneer, The Sims, and they still have bugs here and there which is understandable for the game in the early access. But on the other hand, they have the best, gorgeous look for the high-definition city and the dynamic customization of its Zois. Maybe, we need to give a little more time to wait until the game is mature enough to finally enjoy the full experience.

Talking about the price, as expected, inZOI base game will cost more indeed, but it actually costs the same as a single The Sims 4 expansion pack, which is still worth the money compared to The Sims 4 pack because inZOI base game already gives you the near-complete content, for now. Moreover, they have an extra free DLC, which is super generous.

But be reminded that this is a high-graphic game that requires a minimum of 64-bit processing / i5 or Ryzen 5 Core / 12 GB RAM / RTX 2060, or check the details on inZOI page on Steam. That alone won't be compatible for a portion of players out there. So check out the minimum and recommended requirement before buying the game is actually wise for this case.

Despite the good-looking graphics, inZOI is still far from its ripe state to catch up with The Sims series, or even replace it wholly. They both have their own audience because both games actually have their own advantages which make them separately unique while being in the same genre.

3. Paralives

The next one, the underdog of the trio, "Paralives". This game is made by an indie team, "Paralives Studio". They are arguably the one with the most goodwill, listening to the community for feedback and future content, trying to scratch the itches where people found it itchy when playing The Sims series.

In the communities, some agree that Paralives has a better build mode and has put more freedom into it. But the controlled person in the game, people called it "Para", apparently doesn't show a very good interaction with the people and the environment just yet because the game is relatively new compared to the other 2 big titles. We can still encounter bugs every now and then but it is expected for the early access game. However, it seems that it is a promising game seeing their developers being passionate on the project.

Talking about the art style, it doesn't go with the realism that inZOI has, instead it has its own unique cartoon style that still looks fresh and good. With the big ambition the studio has brought Paralives onto the same table with the other 2 big titles, Paralives deserves the seat among them as it also provides its own unique perspective in the same genre.

Paralives has been long focusing on designing the game by answering the pain points the Sims community has been complaining about. The team has been working diligently to fix current issues and will add more features in the future, but even so, the current build mode is already strong even in the early access, so I think it is worth keeping an eye on for future updates until it has connected the missing links and carved it into a complete gem.

Price-wise, Paralives costs a bit less than inZOI or a big Sims 4 expansion, so it feels like good value. As for specs, the official minimums (posted November 2025) are a Core i5 or Ryzen 5 / 12 GB RAM / GTX 1060 or RX 6600 XT, or you can consult directly to Paralives page on Steam. That's easier to run than inZOI. Just double check Steam before buying, since specs can still change in early access.

So, Which One Should You Pick?

Honestly speaking, none of them cancel each other out, and that's the fun part of this whole rivalry. The Sims is safer, content-packed, and a proven choice if you just want to play something today. inZOI is for the folks chasing gorgeous visuals and a slightly more untamed, ambitious simulation, as long as your PC and your patience for Early Access can keep up. Paralives is the long game, a bet on a passionate indie team that's been listening to the community from day one.

Personally, I think the competition itself is the real win here. For years The Sims had basically no serious rival, and now we finally have options. Whichever one ends up being your favorite, we will be living in a genuinely exciting time to see the advancement of life simulation games.

Hope you got some insights! Also, thanks for reading!
